The small little beautiful town of Mandawa is in the heart of the Shekhavati region. Known throughout for its wonderful castle and magnificent havelis, Mandawa gives the impression of living in the bygone era. Situated at the distance of about 190 kms form Jaipur, the place experiences extreme climatic conditions.
The Shekhavati region is for famous for the merchants and their products, which they traded. It was in the 18th century that they decided to settle here thus building beautiful havelis and constructing buildings as their dwelling places. Later the place was deserted and went into obscurity after the merchants and the wealthy people shifted from this place. But the buildings they built still remained the same and today have become the objects of tourist interest.
Mandawa can be transcribed as surprise at every turn. No single room either, in the havelis, is similar to that f the other. The beautiful arches and the intricate craftsmanship are rarely found anywhere else in the state of Rajasthan. Decorated with wonderful paintings and great antique murals, the designs were once ornate with precious gems as well.
The medieval Fort of Mandawa is the center of activity of Mandawa. Founded in the 18th century, the Fort dominates the skyline of Mandawa with beautifully painted arched gateways and some splendid intricate carvings.
Some of the famous havelis of Mandawa are the Saraf haveli, and Chokhani and Ladia havelis. The Binsidhar Newatia Haveli has some curious paintings on its outer eastern wall-a boy using a telephone, and a European woman in a car driven by a chauffeur. The Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli has some defaced erotic images.
Mandawa has many places around for touring and excursion like the Nawalgarh fort, the Mukundgarh fort and the Dundlod.

The Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli, Mandawa is one of the beautiful palatial mansions in Mandawa which attracts the tourists from all over. The spacious and lavishly designed rooms in the Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli, Mandawa are decorated with the royal portraits that exude the grandeur and regal ambience of the by gone eras. Goenka Double Haveli
This haveli, with two gates, has monumental façade of elephants and horses. The outer walls, jutting balconies, alcoves and overhanging upper storeys of the Goenka Double Haveli are replete with patterns and paintings, ranging from traditional Rajasthani women and religious motifs to Europeans in stylish hats and Victorian finery.
Murmuria Haveli
The paintings of the haveli include a train with a crowded level crossing, with crow flying above it. Another impressive picture is that of Nehru on a horseback, holding the national flagThe paintings of trains, cars, George V, and Venice were executed on the walls of this haveli during the 1930s by Balu Ram, one of the last working artists of the region. In pictures - like Lord Krishna with his cows in English courtyard and a young Nehru on a horseback, holding the national flag - this haveli uses a unique theme blending the East with the West. The haveli also features a long frieze depicting a train with a crow flying above the engine and much activity at the railway crossing.
Jhunjhunwala Haveli
The Jhunjhunwala Haveli, Mandawa is famous for its intricately painted ceiling and walls painted with golden leaves. The image of Krishna is one of the important paintings in the Haveli. Lord Krishna can be seen here surrounded with Gopis or milkmaids and the riot of bright colors accentuates the beauty of the frescoes. Mohan Lal Saraf Haveli
The Mohan Lal Saraf Haveli, Mandawa is decorated with beautiful paintings and portraits. The royal portraits of the Sarafs bring out the grandeur and splendor of yesteryears. Excursions: Nawalgarh is situated around 37 km south of Mandawa and is famous for its fort, built in 1737. Other attractions here include havelis of Anandi Lal Poddar, Aath Haveli, Hem Raj Kulwal Haveli, Bhagton Ki Haveli, and Khedwal Bhavan.
Parsurampura is located some 43 km south east of Mandawa and has the distinction of having the best-preserved and oldest paintings in the Shekhawati region.
Mukundgarh is around 25 km southeast of Mandawa and is a tiny village famous for its fort and havelis..
Dundlod is situated around 30 southeast of Mandawa and is famous for its fort and havelis. The attractions in this place include the Jagathia Haveli, Satyanarayan Temple, and Tuganram Goenka Haveli apart from the Dundlod fort and palace.
Fatehpur was established in 1451 as a capital for Muslim nawabs but was taken by the Shekhawat Rajputs in the 18th century. Some of the attractions include the Mahavir Prasad Goenka Haveli, Gauri Shankar Haveli, Nand Lal Devra Haveli, and Harikrishnan Das Sarogi Haveli apart from a 17th century baoli.
Jhunjhunu is the district headquarters and the largest town in the Shekhawati region. The town was founded by the Kaimkhani nawabs in the mid-15th century, and stayed under their control until it was taken by the Rajput ruler Sardul Singh in 1730. The major attractions in the city include the Khetri Mahal, Bihariji Temple, Modi Haveli, and Kaniram Narsinghdas Tiberwala Haveli.
